چکیده

A system for handling up to 120 tons/day of municipal refuse has been developed for co-firing with coal in a spreader-stoker boiler at the Colum bus, Ohio, Municipal Electric Plant. This system is unique in that the refuse has undergone only shred ding to 90 percent minus 4 in. (10 cm) and magnetic separation of ferrous material. The refuse-handling system comprises: (1) a push-pit with a hydraulic ram for receiving the shredded refuse from a transfer truck; (2) appropriately situated augers and a belt to deliver the refuse to the boiler level; (3) an inter face consisting of a hopper, augers, and chutes where the refuse is separated into two streams; and (4) two air-swept spouts to inject the refuse into the boiler. The system was developed to study: (1) combus tion of the shredded refuse with coal on a traveling grate; (2) corrosion effects on boiler-tube metals; and (3) environmental effects of the co-firing, with respect to emissions and ash residues. Co-firing of the refuse with high-sulfur coal up to a 60:40 mix on a Btu basis has only slightly increased the initial corrosion rate of boiler tube metals beyond that ·This project has been financed in part with federal funds from the Environmental Protection Agency under Grant No. R-804008-2 from the Municipal and Industrial Re search Laboratories, Cincinnati, Ohio. Emissions of sulfur oxides from the high-sulfur coal can be reduced to environmentally acceptable levels by dilution with the refuse (0.25 percent sulfur) and by action of the alkalis in the refuse.

Numerical modeling of biomass combustion in a stoker boiler

Biomass fuel is considered a promising substitute for traditional fossil fuels. Amid a great variety of methods for converting the energy in biomass fuel into usable energy, direct combustion is still the dominant technology employed by industry. Because biomass fuel possess a much wider range of physical and chemical properties than fossil fuel, its combustion behavior is similarly diverse (an...

Control of Emissions from Cofiring of Coal and RDF: Final Report

Research has been conducted toward developing technology for co-firing of coal with municipal solid waste (MSW) in order to reduce emissions of chlorinated organic compounds, particularly polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDDs and PCDFs). Previous benchand pilot-scale research has shown that presence of SO2 can inhibit the PCDD and PCDF formation, and suggested cofiring high-sulfur...

Suitability assessment for handling methods of municipal solid waste

Solid waste management is challenging in Phnom Penh city, Capital of Cambodia. The only one formal treatment taken is the final disposal of mixed waste into an open dumpsite. The current study analyses the physical and chemical characteristics of municipal solid waste disposed of in the dumpsite to assess their suitable handling methods. The current study found that the major compositions of wa...

A New Agro/Forestry Residues Co-Firing Model in a Large Pulverized Coal Furnace: Technical and Economic Assessments

Based on the existing biomass co-firing technologies and the known innate drawbacks of dedicated biomass firing, including slagging, corrosion and the dependence on fuel, a new model of agro/forestry residue pellets/shreds and coal co-fired in a large Pulverized Coal (PC) furnace was proposed, and the corresponding technical and economic assessments were performed by co-firing testing in a 300 ...

Calorific and greenhouse gas emission in municipal solid waste treatment using biodrying

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Urban intensity and activities produce a large amount of biodegradable municipal solid waste. Therefore, biodrying processing was adopted to ensure the conversion into Refuse Derived Fuel and greenhouse gases. METHODS: This study was performed at a greenhouse, using six biodrying reactors made from acrylic material, and equipped...
